Unveiling the Trail’s Essence
The journey officially starts in Vale do Centeanes. There, you’ll embark on an 11.5-kilometer round-trip adventure. This well-marked trail winds through stunning coastal views, revealing beautiful views along the way.
The trail is not a loop, so you have two options for completing the hike:
- Either walk the entire 11.5 kilometers back to the starting point,
- Embark on a one-way journey and hitch a ride back to Vale do Centeanes. Hitchhiking in the Algarve is generally considered safe and reliable. So don’t hesitate to ask for a lift from friendly locals.
The trail features some steep ascents and descents that will test your adventurous spirit. But it’s important to remember that this trail can be easily enjoyed by beginners. Hiking is a journey, not a race. Take your time, enjoy the scenery, and appreciate the beauty of nature.
To note: I did this hike two times, once in 2019 and the other in 2021. The first time, the idea was to spend the day hiking along the coast and discover all the beaches one by one. Then, I decided to do it again just because I liked this hike so much! The path along the cliffside offers stunning views, which bring me each time to paradise for a day.
As You Venture Through the Valleys
The first leg of the Seven Hanging Valleys journey takes you to Praia do Vale do Centeanes. It is a picturesque cove amidst stunning cliffs and forming grottoes. The golden sand and waters provide a tranquil oasis, perfect for relaxing and soaking up the sun.
Next, you’ll make your way to the iconic Alfanzina lighthouse. It is a beacon of light that has guided seafarers along the Algarve coast for over a century. The lighthouse stands as a proud symbol of the region’s maritime heritage. It even became a popular tourist attraction, being recommended by local tour companies.
After admiring the lighthouse, continue your hike to Praia do Carvalho. It is a hidden gem tucked away behind a narrow, stepped tunnel. The beach’s clear sand and crystal-clear waters make it a paradise for swimming, sunbathing, and exploring the cliffs and caves. From Praia do Carvalho, you’ll see the impressive Algar Seco rock formation. This landscape, sculpted by the relentless forces of nature, is a must-see.
The next stop on your journey is Praia de Benagil. It is a beach renowned for its natural archway that resembles a cathedral.
The last leg of the trail takes you to Marinha Beach, considered one of the most beautiful beaches in Europe. The panoramas reveal an array of outstanding landforms, including grottoes, stony arches, and sea stacks.
To note: this last part of the trail is an extremely busy 2-kilometer stretch. Many tourists walk this section between the two beaches. Both places, Benagil and Marinha Beach, are two main places, attracting thousands of people every day.
As well, at Benagil Beach, there are several restaurants. Then, there will be no more cafes or restaurants until the end of the trail, except a food kiosk at Praia Carvalho.
Unveiling the Treasured Benagil Cave
Nestled along the coastline, lies the Benagil Cave, a natural masterpiece sculpted by nature. The cave’s defining feature is the majestic archway that frames a mesmerizing view of the sky from inside. Formed by centuries of erosion, it stands as a testament to the power of nature’s artistry.
The interior is made of stalactites and stalagmites. Their delicate formations add to the cave’s otherworldly atmosphere. The waters provide a refreshing escape from the sun’s warmth. The lapping of the waves creates a soothing soundtrack to the experience.
Whether you’re admiring the cave from the shore or venturing inside, it is an unforgettable destination. The cave is accessible on different options:
- For those who do not want to effort: you can take a boat tour to admire the archway from the water.
- If you’re a bit more adventurous, you can rent kayaks and stand-up paddleboards.
- Strong swimmers can also reach the cathedral by water.
To note: given the existing currents of the waters, it is much recommended to opt for the first two options. Proceeding further along the coast without proper training and safety precautions could put you at risk.
The Ideal Time to Hit the Trails
The earlier you start, the earlier you will finish. We recommend starting the Seven Hanging Valleys hike no later than 8 am, especially in the summer. Take the bus early if you are using public transportation or drive early if you have rented your car.
In any case, starting early is the best option. Depending on the number of stops you make along the way, you will reach the other end between 11 am and 12 pm. The perfect time for a snack or lunch break before heading back!
For those who are hiking during the winter season, it is possible to start later and still have a pleasant experience as the heat is not too intense. However, I do not recommend starting no later than 9 am.
Special Advice for an Unforgettable Hiking Experience
- Wear comfortable, supportive shoes with good traction to navigate the varying terrains.
- Bring plenty of water and snacks to stay hydrated and energized throughout the hike.
- Protect yourself from the sun. Shield yourself from the Algarve’s warm sun with sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses.
- Finally, respect the environment and minimize your impact on the ecosystem.
